More Than Truck Fleet Toll Management

Albany, New York-based Bestpass, a longtime toll management and payment platform, late last year acquired Fleetworthy Solutions, a provider of fleet safety, compliance, and risk management solutions. The combination created a comprehensive suite of services covering all aspects of tolling, compliance, and safety for commercial fleets.

The new acquisition of Drivewyze, the company said, addresses a frequent request from customers for a combined offering that streamlines toll management, weigh station bypass, and safety solutions.

It also builds on a 2023 partnership between Bestpass and Drivewyze to streamline the customer experience for fleets adopting weigh station bypass and toll management services. Now customers will benefit from an even more integrated and expansive suite of services, according to the announcement.

According to Tom Fogarty, Bestpass-Fleetworthy Solutions CEO, combining the two companies and sharing technology will accelerate product innovation and address the current and future needs of fleets, owner-operators, and government agencies.

“Drivewyze is a transportation technology leader that offers the industry’s best weigh station bypass solution and proactive in-cab safety alerts — which helps keep drivers and fleets operating more efficiently and safely,” said Fogarty.

“We have had a very successful partnership in place, and many of our existing customers also use a weigh station bypass solution to reduce operating costs and driver downtime. This strategic move to acquire Drivewyze will allow us to offer customers a more comprehensive, innovative, and integrated solution.”

In addition to fleet management services, Drivewyze partners with public agencies to improve commercial motor vehicle safety and compliance solutions with smart infrastructure and connected vehicle systems.

Drivewyze Name Will Remain

Drivewyze CEO Brian Heath will continue with the organization and work alongside Fogarty as a special advisor.

“The combination of our companies brings scale and acceleration to the larger mission of creating a safer and more efficient transportation system,” said Heath.

Under this agreement, Drivewyze will continue to operate under its Drivewyze brand and retain its scope of business as a Bestpass-Fleetworthy product offering. For Drivewyze customers, there will be no disruption to existing services and support.

Bestpass Builds on Toll Management Solutions

Bestpass, founded in 2001 in Albany, New York, provides toll management solutions for commercial fleets. The company covers 100% of major toll roads in the U.S. and processes over $1.5 billion in toll transactions annually, according to the company.

Bestpass offers a range of toll coverage options for owner-operators, regional fleets, and national fleets, as well as customized solutions for specific needs. It saves fleets time and money by consolidating toll payments and providing insight into cost per vehicle.

By eliminating paper bills, Bestpass reduces violations and the manual work they create by an average of 90% per fleet. More than 1.9 million vehicles on the road are using Bestpass.

In recent years, Bestpass has expanded its service offerings beyond toll management through strategic industry partnerships and acquisitions. In 2023, the company acquired Fleetworthy Solutions, a fleet safety and regulatory compliance service provider, to expand its offerings beyond toll management.

In addition to toll management and fleet safety and compliance services, Bestpass-Fleetworthy Solutions offers Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) filing services through ExpressTruckTax, which Bestpass acquired in 2022.

Since 2018, Bestpass has more than tripled its customer base.

Drivewyze Grew Bypass to In-Cab Safety Services

Drivewyze, founded in 2012 in Edmonton, Alberta, delivers in-cab services to commercial truck fleets and drivers. It’s probably best known for its PreClear weigh station bypass service, but the company also offers Drivewyze Free essential alert and advisory solutions, Safety+ premium alerts, and driver behavior coaching.

PreClear offers the largest weigh station bypass network, according to the company, at more than 900 fixed and mobile weigh station sites in 48 states and provinces.

Weigh station bypass technology saves fleets and drivers time by allowing trucks to bypass weigh stations along their route instead of pulling in, which can save anywhere from five minutes to several hours. Carriers earned over 22 million weigh station bypasses in the past 12 months with Drivewyze, according to the company.

In addition to its weigh station bypass service, Drivewyze offers in-cab safety alerts.

Drivewyze Free safety alerts warn drivers, through audible and visual cues, of approaching hazards such as high rollover corners, low bridges, mountain corridors (including upcoming steep grades and runaway ramp locations), and more. Drivewyze Free is available to commercial trucks and fleets for free through the Drivewyze app.

Both the weigh station bypass information and the in-cab safety alerts appear on the truck’s electronic logging device or other in-cab telematics device, including smartphones and tablets.

Safety+ is a premium, subscription-based service. Built on the Drivewyze Free service, Safety+ offers additional safety alerts, such as upcoming severe weather, high violation areas for speeding, high-risk areas for cargo theft, and more. Safety+ also allows fleets to create customized driver alerts, and monitor safety and driver behavior analytics to improve driver coaching through the Drivewyze Hub.

Drivewyze Infrastructure Services provides solutions to government agencies, including Smart Roadways connected truck solutions, Smart Roadside commercial vehicle enforcement (CVE) electronic screening, and Central Park 2.0 truck parking management.

States and other regional transportation agencies use Smart Roadways to directly alert commercial drivers of critical safety information on roadways through Drivewyze Free. Alerts include upcoming traffic slowdowns, active work zones, parked service vehicles, emergency scenarios and more.

Drivewyze is also working with state agencies and regulators to deploy operational tests for expedited and Level VIII electronic inspections.
