Got Questions? ELD and Telematics

Q. One of my drivers is relocating to another state and will be getting a new CDL. Can I use the ELD to edit his driver profile to update his new state and CDL number? If so, how do I link up the account to show recording for the previous seven days?

A. Yes, you can use the ELD to edit his driver profile to update his license number and state of residence. Per Section 395.22(b)(2)(i) it is the fleet’s responsibility to manage ELD accounts, so you must update the driver’s information in the ELD. Ideally, you will be able to merge the data files from the driver’s old and new driver license files. However, if you can’t merge them, then the driver must either manually enter the previous duty status information or provide a printout from the older HOS log to provide an accurate accounting of the duty status for the current and previous seven days for authorized safety officials.

The federal government recently announced that drivers cited during roadside inspections for not complying with the ELD mandate after the Dec. 18, 2017, deadline will receive a “no points cite” that will not affect the safety measurement system that feeds into the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) scores.
