It reports despite losing a five-year battle to try and organize drivers at the Port of Los Angeles, through the port’s clean trucks plan, the union is working to support legislation on the federal and state levels, to make it easier for port truckers, who are mostly classified as independent contractors, to join a union.
Stakes in the battle are high, according to JOC, with wages for some 100,000 port truckers, who are among some of the lowest paid drivers in the trucking industry, rising by a much as 50%.
