Court Upholds Firing of Alcoholic Truck Driver

A federal appeals court has upheld the firing of a truck driver by Crete Carrier after learning about his addition to alcohol.
Lawyers for Sakari Jarvela claimed the company violated the Americans With Disabilities Act and other federal law, after he was diagnosed with alcoholism in 2010, despite working for the company for several years prior and them approving him taking leave for treatment, according to the National Law Review.
In upholding a lower court ruling, the judge in the case said Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations do not permit someone diagnosed with alcoholism to drive.
