Toll booths are one of four proposed funding sources for a $400 million project that would extend I-49 north of Shreveport to Arkansas.
According to a report due to be submitted to the governor next month, a task force is recommending that truck tolls of 16 to 20 cents per mile and passenger car tolls of 6 to 7 cents per mile be used to generate a third of the costs. Higher fuel taxes are another source of recommended income, along with bonds and lobbying for federal transportation appropriations.
The extension would ease traffic on two-lane state Highway 3. Arkansas is building its section of I-49 south to the Louisiana border, and has also been reported to be considering using tolls to fund the road.
