unless truckers are using E-ZPass and traveling in off-peak hours.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey voted to raise tolls at bridges and tunnels for the first time in a decade. Trucks, which formerly paid $4 per axle, will now pay $6 per axle. Truckers with E-ZPass can cross for $5 per axle at off-peak hours, and $3.50 between midnight and 6 a.m., according to a report in The New York Times.
Matthew Wright, president of New Jersey-based Apgar Brothers and a board member of the New Jersey Motor Truck Assn., told the paper the new toll schedule means a "huge increase" in costs for many trucking companies. Local regulations that restrict delivery hours will mean that many truckers won't be able to take advantage of the overnight option, he said.
The increases will pay for $14 billion in construction projects over the next five years.
