According to a report in the Akron Beacon Journal, the two terminals are located only 4 miles apart. If the plans are approved by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Yellow Freight would probably add about 75 jobs in the area immediately, and up to 200 within a year or so. The company currently employs 850 drivers, dockworkers, mechanics and other workers out of its existing 142-door terminal, located just north of the Ohio Turnpike.
The 80,000-square-foot Preston facility was built in 1994 and is located near Interstate 271.
The move could create a tug-of-war between two different Teamster locals, reports the paper. Teamsters Local 407, based in Cleveland, represents employees at Yellow's Richfield operations. Preston workers, however, were represented by Akron-based Teamsters Local 24. Local 407 has said it would represent workers at both Yellow terminals, but the president of Local 24 said he would file a jurisdictional dispute. The two locals have traditionally split their jurisdiction along the Ohio Turnpike.
