The American Transportation Research Institute is asking motor carriers to complete a survey on the role of advanced safety systems in improving trucking safety and productivity.

This research is part of the ongoing TechCelerate Now program, a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration program for accelerating the adoption of advanced driver assistance systems in the commercial motor vehicle industry.

The program gets funding and technical support from the Department’s Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office.

The TechCelerate Now research team includes ATRI, ATA’s Technology & Maintenance Council, and the OOIDA Foundation of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.

The Rise of ADAS

During the annual TMC meeting in 2021, ATRI reported that at the time, the most influential factor for motor carriers that decided not to purchase and use ADAS systems was their belief that a driver’s control could be compromised.

This concern came from both drivers and motor carriers. Since then, many more carriers have adopted the technology, and new generations of ADAS technology have been introduced.

To better understand the issues and opportunities for advanced driver assistance systems in the trucking industry, ATRI wants to identify which technologies are in use by motor carriers and what issues and perspectives they’ve encountered.

Among the topics the survey asks about are:

  • Truck driver acceptance.

  • Repair and maintenance.

  • Safety benefits.

The survey should take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

The survey is posted on the new TechCelerate Now website, which provides more information on the program.

The site also will house the soon-to-be released TechCelerate Now “Return on Investment” calculator, which will allow users to see direct benefit-cost information specific to each carrier and driver.
