Mark IV IVHS, the technology provider for the E-ZPass system, says its new Janus technology could be used in implementing a vehicle-miles-traveled tax system.

Richard Turnock, chief technology officer, pitched the product to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Tuesday.

Turnock said the new RFID technology, Janus, can support the 5.9 GHz bandwidth set aside by the Federal Communication Commission. The technology would allow for the vehicle-to-roadside communication needed to improve safety and mobility.

"America need not wait a decade for the vehicle fleet to turn over before deploying VMT," Turnock said in a statement. "Many existing active technology RFID systems at the roadside can easily be converted to accommodate VMT. New transaction download hotspots can be deployed cost-effectively."

"With Mark IV's VMT-ready technology, America's transportation officials can implement additional tolling, VMT and other forms of transportation demand management quickly, efficiently and with confidence the system won't let them down," he added.
