GPL deployed a demonstration vehicle equipped with the Hypertruck ERX powertrain in its operations throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and across Texas to gain real-time feedback on the operational performance of the vehicle. The vehicle’s deployment provided a wide range of delivery services – from U.S. mail deliveries to full-load deliveries.

Earlier this year, GPL placed an order for 50 Hypertruck ERX units backed by deposits. Production is expected to begin in late 2023. The fleet says the addition of the Hypertruck ERX powertrain is a natural next step as GPL has been successfully operating 30 of Hyliion’s Class 8 hybrid-electric trucks in its fleet for more than a year.

GPL’s current fleet includes about 200 medium- and heavy-duty vehicles that operate on compressed natural gas and renewable natural gas, as well as the hybrid-electric trucks. During the fleet trial with the Hypertruck ERX demonstration vehicle, GPL’s best and most experienced drivers were offered the opportunity to test the vehicle and provide feedback to Hyliion, which will be helpful in advancing the powertrain’s path to commercialization.

“Recruiting and retaining commercial licensed drivers is a challenge in our industry,” Zaidi said. “Offering our most seasoned drivers the opportunity to test the latest and greatest technologies – like the Hypertruck ERX – is an important driver retention tool for GPL.”

GPL’s Director of Operations Matt Brewer was named a 2022 HDT Emerging Leader for overseeing the company’s alternative fuel truck fleet.
