Truckers traveling on select West Virginia interstates will soon be able to keep rolling without stopping to get weighed. According to Associated Press reports, the state Division of Highways is forking over $1.2 million next month to install the PrePass electronic weigh-in-motion system on four state highways.
The system, which is already used in 17 other states, identifies and weighs trucks that have a PrePass transponder when they pass over sensors built into the roadway, then allows approved drivers to bypass mandatory weigh stations.
The PrePass system will be installed on Interstates 64, 70, 77 and 79.
Participation in the system comes after a one-year trial period at the Winfield weigh station, during which the number of trucks using the system increased by 15 percent, state officials said.
