UPS is expected to deliver more than 18 million packages worldwide today, its busiest day of the year.
That's the equivalent of one package for every American child under the age of 5. Or for that matter, one for every man, woman and child in Mozambique. It's about 208 packages a second, and more than a 35 percent surge beyond UPS's average volume of 13.1 million packages a day.
Peak Day marks the pinnacle of UPS's holiday Peak Season, the four weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. In those four weeks, UPS is speeding more than 325 million packages to their destinations.
"Peak Day is truly the Super Bowl of shipping," said Randy Blaisdell, UPS Peak Season planning manager. "It's something we plan for year-round."
To handle the blizzard of holiday packages, UPS supplements its year-round workforce of 370,000-plus employees with tens of thousands of season workers.
