The U.S. Supreme Court says it will hear an appeal of a Michigan truck tax.
The justices will consider an appeal by Yellow Freight System, which is fighting the $10 the state requires the company to pay for registering its vehicles that travel through the state.

If Yellow wins, it could be due a refund of $425,000. If Michigan wins, however, other states could start charging similar fees - fees that could add up to an extra $150 million a year for the nation's trucking companies. Yellow Freight won its challenge in lower courts, but the Michigan Supreme Court sided with the state.
At issue, according to the Associated Press, is a federal law banning states from charging higher fees than they did in 1991. Michigan changed its method that year for 1992 fees. Under the previous system, Yellow Freight did not have to pay anything for about 3,700 trucks that traveled through Michigan but were registered in Illinois.
