Roberts Express, an Ohio-based expedited freight company, will offer Qualcomm's CabCard personal communications system to all its independent contractors.

All Roberts' trucks are equipped with Qualcomm's OmniTracs satellite tracking and communications systems. CabCard is a prepaid service that allows drivers to use the OmniTracs for personal e-mail, along with other benefits such as discounted long-distance phone rates, voice mail, and phone-to-e-mail messaging.
"We have had nothing but enthusiastic and positive responses from our operators," says Virginia Albanese, director of safety, recruiting and contractor relations. "We feel that CabCard will help improve the quality of life for drivers on the road," allowing drivers communication with family and friends without having to go through dispatch. In addition, she says, it will allow Roberts' small fleet contractors to stay in touch with their drivers.
