The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunities Commission has accused Roadway Express Inc. of discrimination against blacks and women.

The Akron-based carrier allegedly refused to promote blacks to upper-level management or hire women as truck drivers, the agency said in charges filed in Washington D.C.
The company denies the charges. "Roadway is an equal opportunity employer," a company spokesman told the Associated Press. "We have well-established procedures and policies to prevent discriminatory practices. Roadway vigorously investigates claims of discrimination and administers harsh discipline to offenders."
Roadway has asked the 6th U.S. Circuit of Appeals in Cincinnati to block a government subpoena seeking personnel records. The company said it already has given the government tens of thousands of documents over the past four years.
According to court records, the company faces four charges of engaging in a "pattern and practice of race and sex discrimination."
