FreightWatch International published its first Holiday Cargo Theft Report, reviewing cargo theft statistics from the seven major holidays in the United States. The report showed a 28 percent increase in cargo theft on a per-day basis compared with the other calendar days.
"While it is common knowledge in the logistics security industry that cargo thieves do not take holidays, this report allows us to identify the actual impact," stated Dan Burges, Corporate Director of Global Intelligence.
Shipments are at additional risk over long holiday weekends and thieves are particularly active over these periods for a variety of reasons, primarily because cargo is not in motion and is often left unguarded.
"As a result, this gives thieves greater opportunity to commit thefts and disappear with the product. Prior to each major holiday, the logistics and security industry is reminded to increase security measures over the upcoming days," Burges continued.
This report analyzes the statistics supporting this commonly understood maxim in an attempt to better explain the increased risk faced by shippers and their supply chain providers. Also discussed are the changes in theft locations and the products targeted.
