State highway officials say it may take a month to repair an overpass leading from Interstate 40 toward the Fort Smith, Ark., area after a tractor-trailer accident damaged the bridge on Monday.

According to the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, the early-morning accident cracked a concrete embankment that supports the bridge. The bridge takes westbound motorists off I-40 and then goes back across the highway, becoming the southbound lanes of Interstate 540.
The trailer hit the bridge support about 6 a.m., after the driver lost control and ran off I-40, said Sgt. David Hyden of the Arkansas State Police.
The concrete embankment is in the median between the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-40.The accident forced a nearly 12-hour closure of the bridge, and at that point, only one lane was opened. One lane should remain open while the embankment is being repaired.
Hyden couldn’t supply detailed information about the circumstances leading to the accident.
