Precision Pulmonary Diagnostics (PPD), creators of a sleep apnea detection and treatment program targeting the commercial vehicle industry, said its vice president, Wendy Sullivan, has received an award from the American Sleep Apnea Association
(ASAA).
Sullivan, a registered nurse who formerly served as an occupational health manager for Schneider National, was awarded the first corporate sleep apnea achievement award from ASAA for her involvement with the implementation of a detection and treatment program aimed at drivers who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
According to the association, the award was given "in recognition of the development of a work place program to screen employees at risk of sleep apnea and providing a compassionate treatment program for those diagnosed." ASAA is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about sleep apnea and to serving people with the disorder.
At Schneider, Sullivan received several awards and nominations for her involvement in driver health and safety issues, including Safety Presidential and National Sleep Foundation awards. "We spent nearly three years working with PPD on developing Schneider's sleep apnea program," Sullivan said. "That effort has resulted in significant cost saving and health benefits for the carrier."
Schneider's program has also generated awareness within the trucking industry and educated drivers about the disorder. "Now that I work for PPD," Sullivan said, " I'm looking forward to the opportunity to bring that knowledge to the rest of the trucking industry. The possibility of improving the health, safety and retention of our industry's drivers is just too great to not share."
