Port Everglades has opened a new cargo terminal with high-tech equipment for faster container processing and tighter security.
According to the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sun-Sentinel, more than $3 million was invested in the venture. Computerized systems include high-tech gates, electronic cargo-ticketing and video surveillance. The terminal will soon feature machines that will identify truck drivers by viewing their hands through an optical scanner, according to the paper.
The terminal is operated by South Stevedoring Inc. Unlike the other terminals at the port, it is not operated by a single shipping company, but instead is open for loading and unloading by any shipping line. Company officials predict this will help "establish Port Everglades as one of the best and busiest cargo terminals in the southeastern United States."
