The Missouri Department of Transportation says drivers should plan extra time into trips to allow for the detour.
Commercial vehicle drivers are urged to follow a specific route which includes four-lane highways -US 61 and Interstate 72. The map of this route is available at http://www.modot.mo.gov/northeast/safe_sound/documents/Comm_Rte54_Detour.pdf.
Trucks with a gross weight less than 40,000 pounds can use US 61, Route B and MO 79 around the closure. Heavier trucks cannot use this route because a bridge on Mo 79 is limited to vehicles of 20 tons or less. The detour used by passenger vehicles is a narrow two-lane route that cannot handle a large volume of commercial vehicles.
