Pacer International, Walnut Creek, CA, has consolidated its cartage (local trucking) capabilities, acquired through various mergers, into a single operating group known as Pacer Cartage.

Cartage, also referred to as "drayage," refers to the local pickup and delivery of freight by truck, often involving transfer to or from a port or railhead.
Pacer's local trucking capability currently consists of about 350 trucks, mostly owner-operator units. Company officials say that consolidating the cartage fleet under centralized management will make for more integrated, tightly controlled service.
The company named Michael J. Jacobsen and Kent E. Prokop as vice presidents, respectively, of the eastern and western cartage divisions.
Pacer plans to expand the cartage operations into more markets next year.
