The Oregon Senate has passed a bill that would bump the speed limit to 70 mph on some freeway stretches.
Senate Bill 502, which now goes to the House, would raise the speed limit for cars from 65 on relatively straight and uncongested portions of Interstates 5 and 84, according to the Associated Press. Trucks would be relegated to 65 mph.
Urban stretches of Interstate probably would stay at 55 mph. The governor's office is studying the need for more state troopers to enforce speed limits.
Oregon and Iowa are the only states west of the Mississippi River with speed limits lower than 70 mph.
