New orders for manufactured durable goods gained 2.9 percent in April, the fourth boost in the last five months
, according to data released by the U.S. Census Bureau. Following a slight drop in March, new orders increased $5.6 billion to $193.9 billion.
Transportation equipment saw the largest rise after two straight monthly decreases. Transportation equipment was up $7 billion, or 16.1 percent, to $50.7 billion.
Shipments of manufactured durable goods were up 1.4 percent, or $2.7 billion, to $196 billion. This is the second straight gain for shipments, following March's 2.1 percent increase. Computers and electronic products saw the largest increase, up 8.1 percent.
For the fourth straight month, inventories of manufactured durable goods increased, with a gain of 0.7 percent to $301.4 billion. In this sector, primary metals increased the most, up 4.2 percent.
