The Oklahoma Tax Commission has begun sending out letters to many carriers that are base-plated in Oklahoma through the International Registration Program (IRP)
and informing them that they do not meet the state’s new standards for an established place of business.
As a result, the Colorado Motor Carriers Assn. (CMCA) reported, many of those carriers cannot register through that state.
A statement from one source familiar with the situation indicated that Oklahoma is rejecting almost 60% of the companies seeking to register there, the CMCA said. The rejections affect companies throughout the country who based their operations within Oklahoma because of an attractive tax environment.
With registrations for these fleets expiring at the end of this month, the late notification of the denial has created a serious problem for companies throughout the country who must quickly register their fleet in a different jurisdiction.
CMCA said it has been working with the ATA and several other states on this issue which affects several of its members.
