Some truckers traveling through Ohio could be seeking an alternative route if Ohio Turnpike workers follow through on threats to strike.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports that about 900 toll collectors and maintenance workers are threatening to walk off the job by Labor Day. The last contract expired Jan. 1, and Teamster negotiators say the turnpike commission is dragging its feet on reaching a new agreement. The workers want more full-time positions with benefits.
If the workers go on strike, the turnpike commission says the turnpike would stay open. However, Teamster drivers could refuse to cross picket lines and thus probably choose other routes, according to the paper.
Many Teamster terminals are located in Akron near the Ohio Turnpike, such as Roadway Express, Yellow Transportation, Consolidated Freightways, USF Holland and United Parcel Service.
The turnpike workers voted to join the Teamsters union earlier this year. Previously they were represented by the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America.
