The New Mexico legislature enacted a new law that penalizes commercial vehicle drivers for failing to report either miles traveled on the state's roads or vehicle weights on a weight-distance tax return
. The rule went into effect July 1.
Vehicle operators who violate either rule are subject to fines as low as $100 and as high as $4,000, if the tax owed is over $3,000, according to the American Trucking Associations' State Laws Newsletter.
The ATA warns that carriers that are fully compliant could be charged with fines if they report miles traveled in the state on the wrong quarter's return.
