The South Texas city of Mission will be the location of a new international bridge to Mexico, scheduled to open in October.


The Anzalduas International Bridge is a $168 million joint project between the U.S. and Mexico. One of the largest border crossings in the country, it will provide a route between Mission and Reynosa, Tamaulipas, a Mexican city involved in manufacturing and import/export operations.

The 2.7-mile bridge will have two southbound and northbound lanes and a pedestrian crossing. It will be located 3 miles up the Rio Grande River from the Hidalgo-Reynosa Bridge on Stewart Road in Mission.

The bridge will connect the South McAllen and Mission international trade areas to the west end of Reynosa, where many maquiladoras and other cross-border businesses are located. This will help to facilitate just-in-time delivery

The Mission Economic Development Authority notes that hauling products by truck over the border, rather than by intermodal transportation from such countries as China, can result in a shorter, faster and cheaper route.

Mission has been developing its transportation systems in other ways, including a new six-lane expressway connecting it with its sister cities and the new Interstate 69, which will connect trade routes from Mexico and Latin America to North America.
