Nebraska Hurries To Repair Flood-Damaged I-80 Bridge
Nebraska is hurrying to repair two Interstate 80 bridge approaches that were washed out last weekend in a flash flood
Nebraska is hurrying to repair two Interstate 80 bridge approaches that were washed out last weekend in a flash flood.
The four-lane Interstate is closed near Ogallala, Neb. Because there is no structural damage to the bridges, the Nebraska Department of Roads has set a goal of reopening all four lanes by Monday.
More than 50 private workers plus several state crews have been mobilized to repair the bridge. Rich Morrell, project manager for the Roads Department, told the Omaha World-Herald he’s never seen such a massive effort in 30 years of working for the state. Work will continue 24 hours a day until the job is finished.
Duane Acklie, owner of Crete Carrier Corp. in Lincoln, told the paper that the local detours that have been posted are not so onerous that truckers should avoid Ogallala, although in some cases it might make sense to use other east-west routes such as I-70 across Kansas.
