Oct. 23 – A mudslide that cut U.S. 95 in two near Bonners Ferry, ID, last week is causing a 112-mile detour for commercial traffic.
Some people have been complaining that it’s taking too long to make decisions on the highway and a route around the slide. “Everybody realizes the importance of getting traffic, school kids and trucks all moving,” said Richard Wolfe of the state Bureau of Disaster Services, “but we want to make good decisions as fast as possible on a detour.”
The detour is crucial, because even if the state can reopen the highway, it might take years.
The mudslide was triggered by construction work where the highway was being rebuilt and realigned.
