The Maryland Transportation Authority and State Highway Administration are warning of increased traffic in the area of the Intercounty Connector/MD 200 as the highway's second segment opens today.
The second segment stretches for 10 miles from Georgia Avenue in Montgomery County to I-95 in Prince George's County. It connects with the first segment of the ICC, from I-270/I-370 to Georgia Avenue, which opened to traffic in February.
Motorists can "test drive" the entire ICC from I-370 to I-95 at no cost through Sunday, Dec. 4, at midnight. The MDTA will begin electronically collecting tolls on the ICC at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 5.
Traffic on the ICC, as well as on local roads leading to and from the ICC, may be more congested due to holiday travel and as motorists take advantage of the test-drive period. Those local roads include Shady Grove Road, Georgia Avenue, Norbeck Road, Layhill Road, New Hampshire Avenue, US 29, Fairland Road, Briggs Chaney Road, Musgrove Road, Old Columbia Pike and Powder Mill Road.
