Maine state police are cracking down on drivers who speed through toll plazas on the Maine Turnpike.

According to published reports, since the Transpass system was installed on the turnpike, allowing users to pass through toll plazas without having to stop, many drivers are ignoring the 5-mph speed limit signs at the plazas.
The Maine Turnpike Authority is raising the speed limit at the toll booths to a more realistic 10 mph, with the speed zone extending 75 feet on either side of toll booths. Troopers equipped with laser speed detectors will be stationed inside random toll booths. They will radio ahead information on offenders to a trooper in a cruiser, who will write a speeding ticket.
Enforcement is expected to begin in late March, after warning signs are changed and the public has had a chance to learn about the new speed limits.
