A global alliance of all modes of transportation is evolving, and logistics will make it work, says U.S. Chamber of Commerce president Tom Donohue.
Speaking at the Truck Renting & Leasing Assn. annual meeting in Rancho Mirage, CA, Donohue said logistics now cut 5% off the price of goods sold in this country, compared to prices elsewhere.
The key to making a global transportation alliance is who manages it, he said. "The worldwide logistics playing field is wide open...e-commerce customers will pay whatever it takes to get the goods there quickly."
He suggested that truck rental/leasing companies, with their extensive commitment to logistics, should become the system's managers--perhaps through TRALA.
The association could do it by expanding its scope in logistics, he said. "Do a study of how you should change and what you should do allied with the other modes," he said. He suggested that as an accompanying move, TRALA might change its name to something like "You Make It, We'll Move It."
"Transportation keeps the whole economic system going," he said. "TRALA has the talents to manage it globally."
