The Kentucky Senate adjourned early last week, effectively killed a House bill aimed at forcing big trucks off the road if they are not equipped with rear underride guards.
Senate Republicans insisted their departure at about noon on Friday was in keeping with a previously announced schedule, but House Democrats and others said it was arbitrary and indicative of partisanship.
Freshman Democrat Ray Jones proposed the bill after several people near his home were killed when their vehicles ran into coal trucks with no rear underride guards, according to the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader.
The bill, SB 154, would have given police more power to enforce underride guard regulations and set a $250 fine. Current law calls for a penalty of $25 to $200, but does not allow officers to put a truck out of service for not having an underride guard.
