News that trucks were involved in most of the wrecks on Pine Mountain in Kentucky since 1996 has prompted the state to ban trucks from U.S. 119.
Effective immediately and lasting indefinitely, all vehicles more than 30 feet long are prohibited from traveling the 7.2-mile stretch of road between Kentucky 932 near Oven Fork and Whitesburg in Letcher County.
The move came as the state announced results of the six-month traffic study on this highway, according to Associated Press reports. That study showed that trucks were involved in more than 60 percent of all crashes on the mountain since 1996 but account for only 3 percent of daily traffic.
Strict enforcement will begin March 26. Kentucky State Police officials will issue citations, but the state has not indicated what penalties they will carry.
