The opening of a new $100 million berth at Norfolk International Terminals will be delayed at
least four months due to community opposition.
The 1,500-foot berth with three new container cranes had been scheduled to open by early March, but will be delayed until at least July, according to the Virginian-Pilot, The port authority had hoped to open a second gate for trucks at the north end of the terminal to accommodate an estimated 800 trucks a day to serve the new berth. But concerns about increased truck traffic on Hampton Boulevard lead the Norfolk City Council to look for
alternatives.
The city and the port have reportedly agreed to a compromise plan that would bring the trucks through NIT's south gate at Terminal Boulevard, while rerouting port employee and service-delivery vehicles to the north entrance. The new terminal's opening will be delayed while the Port Authority expands the current gate to accommodate the planned growth in traffic
