Interstate 65 southbound has reopened at the junction with I-20/59 in Birmingham, Ala., following rush repairs to rebuild a bridge damaged by a fiery fatal truck crash in January.

The new bridge was finished in less than half of the contractors' 90-day contract. Crews have worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week, since construction began Jan. 21.
The bridge was destroyed Jan. 5, when a tanker truck traveling on I-65 north crashed after apparently swerving to avoid a car that had cut in front of it. The truck driver died in the wreck, with the resulting fire causing the overpass above to warp and sag due to the intense heat.
I-65 southbound through the junction has been closed since the crash, meaning detours for those on the heavily traveled route.
The bridge reopened Tuesday afternoon after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony.
