With traffic expected to double and triple along parts of I-19 in Arizona, the state Department of Transportation is making plans to expand the freeway over the next 30 years.

According to The Arizona Daily Star, increased truck traffic from Mexico will be part of the reason for the traffic increase. To deal with the increase, the highway would likely be widened to 10 lanes in Tucson. New interchanges would be built, including a new interchange near Sahuarita south of Tucson to allow access to a planned new highway that would allow bypass Tucson, taking traffic to Interstate 10 east of the city.
The state will hold a series of public meetings in October to get feedback on the preliminary plan. If it is deemed acceptable, the next step would be a more detailed plan, with a master plan to be completed by next spring.
