Florida East Coast Industries Inc. is closing its money-losing long-haul trucking business immediately and laying off all of its 55 full-time drivers,
according to the Orlando Sentinel.
The unit, Florida Express Carriers Inc., is the second trucking company serving Orlando to quit the business since early September, when Consolidated Freightways Inc. ceased operations nationwide.
Company spokesman Husein A. Cumber said Florida East Coast, which is based in St. Augustine, would continue to provide trucking connections to its rail lines, which run from Miami to Jacksonville where they hook up with other lines. The company will use about 100 contract drivers for the short-haul connection service, down from the current 150.
Florida East Coast also owns a commercial-and-industrial development company as well as Orlando-based Epik Communications Inc., which operates a statewide, fiber-optic telecommunications network.
