The Federal Highway Administration is studying the use and effectiveness of uniformed police officers on federal-aid highway construction projects.
Under orders from Congress, the agency is trying to determine how extensively uniformed officers and marked police vehicles are assigned to work sites and whether or not their presence improves safety.
The study is aimed primarily at state and local law enforcement agencies, but any interested parties are welcome to submit written comments. The deadline is Jan. 3, 2000. Comments will be posted on the Department of Transportation’s Docket Management System (http://dms.dot.gov) under docket number FHWA-1999-5387.
