A fatal rockslide last week has prompted Colorado officials to speed up plans to make improvements to I-70 to prevent more slides.
Otto Imig of Erie, PA, was killed last week after he was struck by a rock that shattered the window of the shuttle van he was riding in. As a result, state transportation chief Tom Norton says he wants to get solutions in place during next summer's construction season.
Possible solutions include bolting or netting rocks in place, installing a cable-net fence over the rock face, or building sheds over the Interstate.
Each year the Colorado DOT sets aside $750,000 to prevent rock slides. Drivers are asked to be most careful when rounding curves since that is where most rock slides happen.
