A steep off-ramp from the Tobin Bridge in Boston has been closed to trucks after a truck slammed into three cars and a house last week.

More than 1,000 trucks use the Beacon Street off-ramp every day, many bound for the Chelsea Produce Market. But not anymore.
The Massachusetts Port Authority made the decision under pressure from citizens alarmed about several truck accidents. In the most recent one, three people were injured when a tractor-trailer's brakes failed coming off the U.S. Route 1 ramp just past the bridge and it ran through a red light, hitting three cars before crashing into a house.
The neighborhood has been the scene of a previous truck accidents, including one last year in which a runaway truck hit 11 cars killed one person.
People in the Chelsea community say they have been asking for relief from the dangerous ramp for years. Massport officials say they have looked at alternatives to the ramp since the 1970s.
Chelsea merchants, who rely on the trucks for deliveries, have opposed the idea of shutting down the ramp in the past.
After last summer's accident, state police launched an enforcement effort, doing random checks at the ramp and installing a flashing light warning truckers to check their brakes.
