Cummins announced it will launch a set of software features to integrate its powertrains with automated driving system (ADS) technologies.

Integrating hardware and software in powertrains already leads to top performance and fuel economy, Cummins said, and now it will extend its integration expertise into the automated space as well.

Cummins is actively testing more than 100 vehicles in coordination with ADS technology companies to ensure seamless powertrain integration as ADS solutions enter commercial vehicle markets globally. Some of the companies Cummins is working with include Embark, Kodiak, Plus, and TuSimple, a spokesperson told HDT.

In addition, an announcement from Locomation said it is working with Cummins for joint testing and integration of Cummins powertrains in trucks equipped with Locomation’s autonomous driving technology.

Locomation is aiming to deploy its first product line, Autonomous Relay Convoy, in late 2022. Integrating Locomation’s autonomy software with the firmware running on Cummins' ADS Powertrain System will enable optimized and more precise powertrain control that will result in increased fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions, according to the company. Locomation estimates that through this relationship with Cummins, its autonomous truck design will reduce fuel consumption per truck by 10%.

“With our investment in and commitment to autonomous vehicle technologies, Cummins is prepared to support our customers by deploying autonomous vehicle technologies across the full range of powertrains, including advanced diesel, natural gas, hybrid, or fully electric and hydrogen fuel cells,” said J. Michael Taylor, general manager of powertrain integration for Cummins, in a news release.

“As the world's largest independent engine manufacturer, autonomous vehicle companies are relying on Cummins’ integration expertise and powertrain solutions to design and provide a software solution to accelerate the rate of adoption of autonomous driving software within the heavy-duty trucking industry,” he added.
