Owners of intermodal container chassis got a short respite from federal conspicuity rules, but federal and state authorities are enforcing the June 1 retrofit deadline for everyone else.

According to the National Private Truck Council, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has given container chassis owners until December 1, 2001, to retrofit their equipment with the mandated reflective tape or other devices aimed at improving nighttime visibility. The extension does not apply to intermodal trailers.
The new rules require all trailers manufactured before December 1, 1993, to be retrofitted with the conspicuity devices. Trailers made after that date were marked by manufacturers according to earlier rules of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. More information can be found at www.fmcsa.dot.gov.
