One of the largest less-than-truckload carriers is following the example of its truckload cousins by upgrading its fleet.
Consolidated Freightways is spending nearly $65 million on new trucks and equipment. CF will spend more than $23 million for new linehaul tractors: 300 Freightliner C112 tractors and 30 Mack model CH612 tractors. Another $21 million goes for pickup and delivery tractors: 400 Freightliner Model FL70 tractors and 40 Sterling model 7500 tractors.
The rest will go for new doubles trailers, pickup-and-delivery 48-foot trailers, rebuilt converter dollies, as well as related equipment such as forklifts.
The company based its decisions in large part on discussions with a cross-section of drivers from across the company.
Ironically, CF is buying most of the new trucks from Freightliner, which was begun as a subsidiary of Consolidated Freightways in 1939.
