Despite the economic slowdown, two of the regional less-than-truckload subsidiaries of Con-Way Transportation Services, Ann Arbor, Mich., are building new service centers.

Con-Way Central Express will open two new service facilities in October. The facilities are near Clearfield, Pa., and Providence, R.I. The openings are just in time for the heavy holiday shipping season.
The Pennsylvania facility, located on an 18.5-acre site in Woodland, will serve as major relay point between Midwest and Northeast markets. The new 58-door, 26,000-square-foot freight assembly center will allow for the reduction of transit times from two-days to one-day in 78 freight delivery lanes to and from selected points in New York, New Jersey and Ohio. The facility is scheduled to open October 22.
The 62-door Cranston, R.I., facility replaces an existing terminal in Seekonk, Mass. According to company officials, the new facility will have increased freight handling capacity and improved pick-up and delivery times due to having 30 more doors than the Seekonk facility and an additional 19,000 square feet of dock space. The new facility is located on 14.5 acres and is scheduled to open October 29.
Con-Way Southern Express is building a new company-owned freight assembly center in Glenpool, Okla., near Tulsa.
CSE will immediately develop 25 of the 36 acres purchased with construction of an 80-door, 37,000-square-foot service center and a 12,000-square-foot fueling and maintenance area. Completion is scheduled for March 2002. The new facility replaces a smaller 37-door service center in Tulsa.
Con-Way, a subsidiary of CNF, consists of regional less-than-truckload carriers Con-Way Central Express, Con-Way Southern Express, Con-Way Western Express, Con-Way Canada Express and Con-Way Mexico Express; Con-Way NOW, an expedited carrier specializing in emergency shipment service; Con-Way Logistics, a contract supply chain execution service provider; and Con-Way AIR, an airfreight forwarder with service throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
