Chart Industries, an independent global manufacturer of liquid hydrogen equipment, announced the availability of a new onboard liquid hydrogen fuel system line of products for heavy-duty trucks.

The new fuel system, dubbed HLH2, is available for commercial use.

HLH2 was engineered and manufactured at Chart’s Ball Ground, Georgia, facility and tested at its New Prague, Minnesota, facility. Chart has experience in both liquid natural gas and liquid hydrogen fuel storage systems.

With a global capacity for more than 25,000 units per year for the new HLH2 onboard product, the system requires roughly half of the space and weight of comparable H35 or H70 compressed hydrogen storage, Chart officials said in an ACT Expo press release. This provides advantages for truck applications with heavier loads and longer ranges, they added.

Chart demonstrated dual-side mounting at ACT Expo, which is similar to a convention diesel tank, but it also comes in other configurations to suit a variety of vehicle designs.

HLH2 was developed to meet growing market demand for a variety of fuel cell and internal combustion engine applications, Chart officials said.

Earlier this year, Hyzon announced it would work with Chart Industries to produce a liquid hydrogen-powered heavy-duty commercial vehicle with a range of up to 1,000 miles.

Daimler Trucks is also looking to liquid hydrogen. Daimler Trucks officials say the company prefers to use liquid hydrogen, due to it having a higher energy density in relation to volume than gaseous hydrogen.
