Cargo Traffic Up At NY/NJ Port
The Port of New York and New Jersey set new records for cargo last year
The Port of New York and New Jersey set new records for cargo last year.
Even while other East Coast shipping centers saw an overall decline, cargo flowing through the New York/New Jersey port was up 6 percent from 2000.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reported this week that more than $86 billion worth of cargo flowed through the piers in Newark, Elizabeth, Bayonne and Jersey City, N.J., as well as Staten Island and Brooklyn, N.Y.
The port handled 3.3 million 20-foot shipping containers. That was up 8.7 percent from 2000. Its share of total U.S. cargo trade, in tons, increased to 10.7 percent from 9.8 percent the year before.
Meanwhile, tonnage at competing ports in Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia and Norfolk, Va., fell a combined 1.3 percent, according to the Port Authority.
