Arkansas is building two new weigh stations to target truckers entering the state on Interstates 40 and 55.

The scales will serve northbound trucks on I-55 and westbound ones on I-40, according to a report in the Memphis Commercial Appeal. The I-55 station should be finished by next spring or summer. The one on I-40 won't be complete until fall or winter of 2000.
The new weigh stations are designed to fix a weakness in the state's existing scale network: Many trucks entering the state on I-40 and I-55 bypass existing scales. The new ones will be right next to the river. The only way you could bypass them would be if you put the truck on a boat, says an Arkansas engineer.
The existing stations will continue to serve truckers leaving the state.
