Hy-Drive Technologies Ltd., with headquarters in Alberta, Canada, is a hydrogen-based energy and power technology firm that has developed a patented Hydrogen Generating System (HGS).
Hy-Drive Touts Hydrogen Generating System for Commercial Truck Engines

By converting distilled water into hydrogen, the HGS generates and injects small amounts of hydrogen gas into the combustion chamber of a regular internal combustion engine. When the hydrogen enters the engine's combustion chamber, it produces a more complete burn of the fuel, resulting in reduced emissions, increased horsepower and improved fuel economy, according to Hy-Drive.
Based on testing trials to date, the HGS has shown performance enhancements on a wide variety of internal combustion engines, depending on the engine type, including:
• Nine percent to 30 percent fuel savings
• Two percent to 6 percent horsepower improvement
• Up to 98 percent reduction of carbon monoxide
• Up to 45 percent reduction of nitrous oxide, and
• Up to 98 percent reduction of particulate matter
The initial target markets for Hy-Drive are existing commercial diesel-powered trucks and buses.
Measuring about 20 inches tall and a foot wide and deep, the HGS is connected to the vehicle's engine and powered by the standard electrical charging circuit. The hydrogen and oxygen gases are delivered to the air intake by a vacuum pump. An electronic process controller varies the energy input to maintain a constant flow of gases, while an electronic safety module ensures safe operation.
The HGS uses two liters of distilled water every 80 hours of operation. The HGS operates only when the engine is running and produces hydrogen and oxygen on demand. Gases are never stored.
By promoting a more complete burn, the Hy-Drive HGS reduces the products of incomplete combustion and provides more work output from the same amount of fuel. According to the company, the Hy-Drive HGS reduces vehicle emissions to well below acceptable levels and offers one of the best solutions to transportation air pollution on the market today.
To date, Hy-Drive Technologies has field-tested about 450 HGS units representing four generations of product improvements. The commercial HGS unit features fully integrated process control technologies, reduced unit size and weight, improved safety monitoring circuits, reduced production costs, and a more efficient electrolysis process for generating hydrogen gas.
