The Truckload Carriers Assn. is working on finding solutions to the fact that it's increasingly difficult for independent owner-operators to get health insurance.

According to TCA's most recent newsletter, "The independent driver's health insurance dilemma is whether to be underinsured or to not be insured at all."
The association notes that it is very difficult for independents to get health insurance, especially if there are pre-existing health conditions. "Insurance carriers by and large are not looking to insure the independent driver," says the newsletter. "However, exceptions exist and those are what we want to uncover and develop to the fullest extent."
TCA is asking its member carriers to complete a health insurance survey. In addition, the issue will be the topic of a session at the organization's independent contractor meeting Sept. 20-21 in Chicago.
